Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)

Mugwort is one of the most traditional plants in European folk magic. In the Middle Ages, it was considered particularly effective "against and for witchcraft" – as a protective herb, a companion in rituals, and an ingredient in many traditional magical recipes. Its scent is tart, herbaceous, and earthy, acting like a clear cut through heavy, old, or stuck energies.

In addition to its ritual significance, mugwort was also valued as a medicinal plant in antiquity and the Middle Ages, among other things, to support digestion (without any claims of healing properties).

What you can use mugwort for (traditionally)

Ideal for:

• Protection and banishing rituals, demarcation, and energetic cleansing

• Rauhnächte & transitions: letting go, new beginnings, threshold times

• Ancestral and shadow work: clarification, order, "releasing old things"

• Rituals of intuition: dream and trance work, meditation, oracle work

• Ritual beginning/end: to open and close the space

Scent profile

Tart • herbaceous • earthy • slightly bitter – ancient, clear, and uncompromising.

Application

• On charcoal (sparingly, the smoke is intense)

• On sieve/incense burner (gentler and easy to dose)
  Tip: Pairs well with juniper, frankincense, myrrh, copal and benzoin.
